Collat Jewish Family Services Finds a Better Fit with NewOrg
How a Birmingham nonprofit supporting seniors and families found a more cost-friendly case management solution with stronger long-term support
Collat Jewish Family Services (CJFS) is a Birmingham, Alabama-based human services nonprofit providing care management, counseling, transportation, caregiver support, financial assistance, and other services to individuals and families throughout the community.
Guided by Jewish values and open to people of every faith, age, and background, CJFS has a particular focus on helping older adults maintain their independence and quality of life. Its programs range from clinical and case management services to caregiver support and CJFS CARES, a respite program providing activities and social engagement for people living with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other memory disorders.
A Longstanding Commitment to the Birmingham Community
First incorporated as Jewish Family Services Birmingham in 1989, CJFS was established to meet the human service needs of Birmingham’s Jewish community. As the organization grew, its services expanded to support individuals and families throughout the broader community.
In 2001, the organization became Collat Jewish Family Services in recognition of a flagship gift from Charles and Patsy Collat. Today, CJFS continues that tradition of service as a partner agency of United Way of Central Alabama and the Birmingham Jewish Federation, supporting older adults, caregivers, and families across the Birmingham area.
NewOrg simplifies communications, documentation and data reporting, unleashing our organization’s potential to operate more efficiently, make data driven decisions, and tell our story of client impact.

The Challenge: Finding a More Sustainable Case Management Solution
CJFS had been using an existing case management system to manage client information and service delivery across its programs, but the organization was not receiving the level of support it needed. Even after going through a platform refresh, the system still did not fully meet CJFS’s needs. Rising costs created another concern, leading the organization to consider whether its current solution was still the right fit for the future. With programs spanning senior services, counseling, caregiver support, financial assistance, and more, CJFS began looking for a case management platform that could better support its evolving needs.
Why Collat Jewish Family Services Chose NewOrg
CJFS ultimately selected NewOrg for its combination of affordability, flexibility, centralized case management, and long-term customer support.
Key factors in the decision included:
-
A more cost-friendly solution: NewOrg provided a more affordable option for managing CJFS’s case management and reporting needs.
-
Long-term customer support: Responsive support and an ongoing relationship with its technology provider were important priorities for CJFS.
-
Support for multiple service areas: NewOrg could support workflows across senior services, caregiver programs, counseling, financial assistance, outreach, and other areas within one environment.
-
Centralized case management: CJFS could bring client intake, service documentation, assessments, scheduling, billing, forms, and reporting together in one platform.
How NewOrg Supports CJFS Programs and Service Delivery
With NewOrg in place, CJFS now has a centralized nonprofit case management platform supporting older adult services, caregiver programs, clinical services, intake, volunteer coordination, billing, and reporting.
Standardized Intake and Public Portal
NewOrg’s public portal allows clients to complete registration and intake forms online and upload supporting documents. Submitted information can trigger automatic staff notifications, helping CJFS streamline intake and move clients into the appropriate services more efficiently.
Older Adult Services and Caregiver Support
For programs supporting older adults and caregivers, CJFS can use standardized assessments, care plans, and automated reminders to help staff consistently document client needs and services. Keeping this information within the client record also gives staff a clearer view of services and progress over time, supporting more coordinated care for the individuals and families they serve.
Clinical Services and Medical Billing
CJFS can manage clinical documentation and medical billing within NewOrg, helping staff connect service delivery with administrative and billing workflows. Custom reporting also supports assessment tracking, outcomes monitoring, claims, and co-pays, giving the organization greater visibility into both client services and related billing activity.
Appointment Scheduling and Notifications
Built-in scheduling tools allow clients to book clinical and case management appointments while helping staff manage appointments within the same system used for client services. Centralizing scheduling alongside case information helps reduce disconnected workflows and makes it easier for staff to coordinate services.
Secure File Sharing and E-Forms
Staff can send electronic forms and assessments for clients to complete and sign, reducing reliance on paper-based processes. Secure file sharing also allows CJFS to collect and manage documents alongside other client information, creating a more consistent digital workflow for staff and the people they serve.
Outreach and Volunteer Management
Beyond direct client services, CJFS can track community outreach activities and coordinate volunteer opportunities through NewOrg. Volunteers can sign up for opportunities through the built-in events calendar, helping the organization manage another important part of its community engagement within the same platform.
Custom Reporting
NewOrg’s reporting tools give CJFS greater visibility into open and closed clients, program participation, assessment outcomes, and other key service data. By bringing information from across its programs into a centralized reporting environment, leadership can more easily understand program activity, monitor outcomes, and respond to organizational and funder reporting needs.
